Compression Series
People leave a surprising amount of material traces in their paths. Through walking I observe patterns in what is left behind. I have collected torn and rippled aluminium sheet from the same railway underpass over time. These are physical traces left after the clean-up from a Pantech truck that has crashed into the guard that was built to warn large vehicles approaching railway bridge. It has taken me a while to think about how I would use the aluminium, the ripples are tactile and seductive, while being the record of the moment of impact.
Compression Series and Fidgeting Eyes (pins) were exhibited in In Touch 2025.
Saturday 9 - Saturday 16 August 2025
Woolloongabba Art Gallery
The exhibition is the result of conversations with colleagues from Joshibi University in Japan. When they visited in early 2025 we were discussing what we were currently working on. I showed them an image of the shapes I had cut out from the crushed aluminium. They were intrigued that the forms had been sourced from the road so we went to view the bridge. It turns out that was particularly inspiring for ABE Daisuke who then went to find something on a Brisbane road to inspire his work. What he found and what it inspired is in the exhibition. A brief trip to Gold Coast provided the inspiration for FUKUSHI Tomoko, she didn't spot any female surfers. Her works record the visit with the correction of female surfers given prominence. Linda Dennis (also from Joshibi University) has created ceiling hung works featuring found handkerchiefs.
