Greensmith Opening at Artisan

1/7/2014

I'm really excited about Greensmith. Earlier this year Artisan put  call out to Queensland Jewellers whose works had an eco or ethical focus. They were seeking to hear from jewellers interested in being considered for an exhibition of eco-jewellery from Queensland and California, in partnership with the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Queensland. I was really pleased to have three works selected and that a lot of my friends and students were selected too.

The works I am exhibiting are ones that have got me thinking about a much younger me. The ceramic dog and cat have been with me for as long as I remember. Not because I particularly liked them, but for some reason I had always kept them with me in a box. I think I now know why. I knew they had been my mothers when she was a teenager.  So when I started working with with them I figured it was as good a time as any to ask my mother why I had them. She had no idea, but she still had a related piece in a jumble of found items on a windowsill. The related piece my mum has is complete in perfect condition. From this I surmised that I had broken the two I had when I was small and that would explain why I had carried them with me for so long.
